President Marcos Inspects Collapsed Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge, Calls for Accountability & Better Monitoring

President Bongbong Marcos personally inspected the collapsed Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge in Isabela, emphasizing critical design flaws, excessive load issues, and financial losses due to the incident. He stressed the importance of strict monitoring and accountability to prevent similar infrastructure failures in the future.

Key Findings from the Inspection

🔹 Structural Design Flaws Identified

President Marcos pointed out major weaknesses in the bridge's design, including insufficient structural support and the use of substandard materials, which contributed to its collapse.

🔹 Overloading Exceeded Bridge Capacity

The bridge was designed to support a maximum of 44 tons, but two trucks weighing over 100 tons each passed through, far exceeding safety limits and leading to structural failure.

🔹 Escalating Financial Costs

Initially, the bridge had a budget of ₱900 million, but due to design issues and reconstruction needs, costs have surged to ₱1.2 billion, causing a significant waste of public funds.

🔹 Call for Stricter Monitoring & Accountability

President Marcos urged better monitoring of infrastructure projects to prevent similar disasters. He emphasized that those responsible for the flawed design must be identified and held accountable to avoid future taxpayer losses.

The collapse of the Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge serves as a wake-up call for improved infrastructure oversight to ensure public safety and responsible use of government funds.
